During April 18 to 22, the 2018 Conference of the International Society for the Study of Narrative was held in Montreal, Canada. Professor Wang Changcai was invited to this conference.
International Society for the Study of Narrative is the top-level academic community in Narratology. The annual conference has always been regarded as a big event in academic circle. The 2018 conference is hosted by Mcgill University of Canada. After a strict examination, 300 scholars from all over the world were invited to attend the conference.
Professor Ato Quayson from University of Toronto, Canadian director and playwright Xavier Dolan , Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink had attended the conference and made a speech. Many famous scholars of Narratology such as Mieke Bal, Gerald Prince, James Phelan, Brian Richardson, Richard Walsh, Jan Alber had participated in discussion within their groups.
Associate Professor Wang was in the group “Unnatural Narative I” hosted by current president Brian Richardson. He made a speech named Unnatural Narrative, Unnatural Fictionality: a Discussion on New Avant-garde Fiction in China. Professor Wang had analyzed the narrative in Chinese new avant-garde fiction and discussed the contradictions with professor Brian Richardson.
During the conference, professor Wang met with professor Dorothy J. Hale from University of California at Berkeley, and gave away the Journal of English Studies which published the Chinese version of her paper. Besides, he had also communicated with professor Shang Biwu and Doctor Nie Baoyu about the situations and development of Narratology in China.
By attending this conference, Professor Wang learn about the frontier theory and development trends in current academic circle, which will be good at his research and teaching. To some extent, it will also expand the academic impact of School of Humanities.
